Calendula officinalis is also known as pot marigold, and it grows in Mediterranean countries. Calendula has been used traditionally in European folk medicine to treat various inflammatory conditions like ulcers. It’s one of the cornerstone natural ingredients for eczema and psoriasis relief in our products. Traditional folk medicine systems use Calendula due to the reported antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and antimicrobial properties of Calendula flowers.
The flowers were also used during the American Civil War to treat wounds and as a remedy for different viral infections such as measles and smallpox. Currently, Calendula is used topically as alternative and complementary medicine in Europe to treat burns, cuts, rashes, and dermatitis. This herb has beautiful yellow flowers, which are used to prepare infusions, tinctures, liquid extracts, creams, and ointments.
There are many different chemicals that have therapeutic activity that are trapped inside the flowers. These compounds in the flowers can be extracted or made available using water or different alcohols based on the chemical structures of each
compound. Therefore, these chemicals are able to therapeutically benefit the applied skin surface.
The antioxidants in Calendula flowers also reduce the levels of reactive oxygen species, which are produced during inflammation by immune cells and cause tissue damage. Calendula flowers also have wound healing properties, since the phytoconstituents increase the level of collagen, which is important for wound healing and skin repair. This provides excellent eczema relief for people with severe cases.
Hydrocotyle umbellata is also known as “acariçoba,” and it grows in tropical regions like South America and India. This plant has long leaves and numerous small white flowers. Hydrocotyle is used by communities in South America like Brazil, Argentina, and Cuba to treat inflammatory conditions like ulcers, eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. In South American and Indian folk medicine, preparations of Hydrocotyle leaves or roots are taken either orally or used in a bath to treat these
The leaves and the subterraneous parts (i.e. roots) of the Hydrocotyle plant contain various compounds that have therapeutic activity. However, these compounds are not readily available. Therefore, the compounds with biological activity are extracted using different alcohols and water, depending on the chemical structure of each compound.
The leaves contain flavonoids, saponins, and triterpenes. The antioxidants in Hydrocotyle leaves reduce the levels of reactive oxygen species produced by immune cells that cause tissue damage during inflammation. This makes it an excellent all-natural ingredient for eczema and psoriasis relief. The leaves also contain hexadecanoic acid methyl ester, falcarinol, and phytol, which reduces the levels of inflammatory proteins known as cytokines and inhibits the migration of immune cells like neutrophils.
Also, the subterraneous parts of Hydrocotyle contain hibalactone. Research in a mouse model of inflammation and pain has shown that hibalactone has anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive (pain) properties. The mechanism of action of hibalactone is not completely understood, but it is thought that hibalactone reduces the level of various inflammatory proteins and reduces the migration of immune cells to the site of inflammation.
Arctium lappa or Lappa major is also known as burdock. It is an edible vegetable that is grown in most countries, especially in Asian countries like Japan. The seeds of Arctium lappa are used in traditional folk medicine due to its diuretic, antipyretic (fever), and detoxifying properties. Burdock is also used to treat gout, hypertension, and other inflammatory diseases.
There are many different chemicals that have therapeutic activity that are trapped inside the roots and seeds of Arctium lappa. These compounds in the roots and seeds can be extracted or made available using water or different alcohols based on the chemical structures of each compound. Therefore, these chemicals are able to exert their beneficial biological activity when taken orally or applied on the skin surface.
The butanol extract from the roots of Arctium lappa inhibits a key inflammatory pathway known as the NFkB pathway and reduces the level of inflammatory proteins known as cytokines, associated with allergies and inflammation. Arctium lappa also reduces the level of B-hexosaminidase, which is an immune protein mediator that increases inflammatory proteins known as cytokines. Research has also shown that the roots of Lappa major contains phenolic compounds, which act as antioxidants by reducing the level of reactive species that can cause tissue damage during inflammation. This provides a means of healing eczema naturally.
Propolis is a dark resinous material that is produced by bees. The purpose of this natural material is to build, preserve, and protect the beehives. Due to its chemical composition and sticky consistency, propolis protects the hive from harsh environmental conditions like rain and high winds, pathogens that can cause infection such as bacteria, and
fungi and predators like snakes and lizards. Bees produce propolis using materials surrounding the hive, like plant pollen, plant secretions, wax, natural resins, and salivary secretions.
Propolis has been used for many centuries to treat various diseases and ailments. Greek and Roman doctors used propolis as a mouth disinfectant, as an antiseptic, and to treat skin wounds. It was also used by Soviet doctors during World War II to treat tuberculosis. Currently, propolis is used topically as an alternative and complementary medicine to treat wounds, burns, acne, and skin infections. In alternative and complementary medicine, propolis is also used to treat cold and flu symptoms and also to prevent cavities and treat gingivitis. Given that the purpose of propolis is to protect beehives, it is no wonder that the compounds found in propolis have biological activity that can provide relief for various ailments. The compounds found in propolis with biological activity are extracted using different concentrations of different alcohols and water. Preparations of propolis are used to make toothpastes, mouthwashes, capsules, throat lozenges, creams, and many of the products here at Orellis that use all-natural ingredients for eczema and psoriasis relief. The therapeutic activity of propolis is linked to the flavonoid, hydroxycinnamic acid, and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) content. Research has shown that CAPE inhibits the release of proteins responsible for inflammation and decreases the movement of immune cells to the site of inflammation.
Also, CAPE activates the production of proteins known as cytokines with anti-inflammatory properties. The antioxidants in propolis reduce the levels of reactive oxygen species produced by immune cells that cause tissue damage during inflammation. Research has shown that propolis has wound healing properties due to its ability to cause tissue remodeling and increase the wound healing rate. Research has shown that the chemical constituents and levels of flavonoids are dependent on the environmental conditions, including the location of the hive, the diversity of plants surrounding the hive, the type of plant pollen used, and the species of bee that produces the propolis. However, all propolis preparations have similar biological activities, since this resinous material has the same purpose in nature, which is to protect the hive.
